Contactzilla vs a Google Workspace directory app (no MDM)
Contactzilla pushes Workspace contacts into the phone address book with MDM. Here's when that is right — and when a directory app without MDM is simpler.
Google Workspace already has your people. Phones still do not. Two common fixes:
- Push contacts into the native Contacts app (Contactzilla and similar), usually with MDM or a config profile.
- Give people a directory app that signs in with work Google and stays read-only (Workspace Sync).
This post is for Workspace admins choosing between those shapes — not a feature laundry list.
What Contactzilla optimizes for
Contactzilla’s Google Workspace flow pulls Directory contacts, then deploys a read-only list to devices through MDM or QR. Staff do not install a directory app. Numbers live in the stock Contacts app, so caller ID and search behave like any other contact.
That is the right design when:
- Phones are company-owned or already enrolled in MDM
- You want one system address book, not another icon
- Field crews must not edit or delete the company list
Public pricing (Sep 2026) starts around $1.79 per device per month on the smallest MDM band, billed annually.
What breaks for teams without MDM
If people use personal phones, MDM-for-contacts is a hard sell. QR profiles help, but you still maintain profiles, replacements, and “why is this profile on my phone?” support.
A directory app flips the tradeoff:
- Admin connects Google Workspace once (read-only)
- Each person installs an app and signs in with work Google
- Admins choose who is visible and which fields appear
- Call, SMS, and WhatsApp sit on the contact card
- No MDM enrollment for the directory itself
Workspace Sync is built for that path. First 5 users free, then €1 per extra user / month.
Side-by-side
| Question | Contactzilla-style | Directory app (Workspace Sync) |
|---|---|---|
| Where do contacts live? | Native Contacts | In the app (+ optional save) |
| MDM? | Usual path | Not required |
| Field-level privacy? | List / MDM oriented | Per-field admin controls |
| WhatsApp from directory? | Via native share/contacts | One tap in-app |
| Cost shape | Per device | Per active user |
Practical recommendation
- Already on MDM and you want Contacts-app caller ID everywhere → evaluate Contactzilla (or sync.blue MOBILE).
- BYOD / light IT and you only need “find a colleague, call or WhatsApp” → start with a directory app. Five free seats is enough to prove it on a real team this week.
