Do you need MDM to put a Google Workspace directory on iPhone?

MDM can push directory contacts into iOS Contacts. You do not need MDM if staff use a Google-signed-in directory app instead. Here's how to choose.

Short answer: only if you insist the contacts live inside Apple’s Contacts app.

Why IT reaches for MDM

Apple will sync a user’s personal Google Contacts when they add a Google account. It will not mirror the Workspace Admin directory onto the phone as a managed address book. So admins look for:

  • CardDAV / third-party sync into Contacts
  • MDM-delivered configuration profiles
  • Vendor tools (Contactzilla, sync.blue, and others) that assume managed devices

Those paths are solid for company-owned fleets. They are heavy for a 40-person agency on BYOD.

The no-MDM path

A dedicated directory app changes the requirement:

  1. Workspace admin connects the tenant with read-only access
  2. Employees install the app from the App Store
  3. They sign in with work Google
  4. The directory appears, stays offline-capable, and follows join/leave changes on sync

No configuration profile. No enrollment for this feature alone. Privacy controls stay with the admin (hide extensions, managers, custom attributes).

That is the Workspace Sync model — free for 5 users, then €1 per extra user per month.

Need per-field hiding without managing profilesDirectory app

Bottom line

MDM is a deployment tool, not a law of physics. Use it when you already own device management. Skip it when the only missing piece is a current team directory on the phone.
