Groups
Department groups mirror Google Workspace and stay locked to it. Custom groups are yours to build. Both show up as filters in the app.
Open Contacts → Groups. There are two kinds.
Department groups (Auto)
Marked Auto. Created from the departments in your Google Workspace and kept in step with them on every sync. You can’t rename or delete them, or add and remove members here: change the department in Google Workspace and the group follows on the next sync. This keeps one source of truth.
Custom groups
Marked Custom. Groups you build yourself, for anything Google doesn’t know about: a project team, the people on call this week, everyone in one building.
- New group: give it a name, then pick its members with Add members.
- Rename or Delete group from the group’s menu. Deleting a group doesn’t affect the contacts in it.
- Remove from group on a member takes one person out.
Custom groups live only in Workspace Sync and never touch Google Workspace.
What groups do in the app
A group is a filter at the top of the contact list: pick one and only its members show. The app shows the members who are in the directory; people who are hidden don’t appear in any group.
Groups show in the app’s filter when Group contacts by is set to Department, the default. See Choose which fields are shared.
